The Great American Eclipse 2017

The Great American Eclipse of 2017 was a major event for me.

I planned for years in advance to travel from Massachusetts to South Carolina so that I could be in the Zone of Totality for the event.

All of my planning and anticipation was rewarded.

The total solar eclipse was an amazing experience. It was 2:43 pm on a bright summer day. The sky suddenly began to darken as though dusk was rapidly approaching, the birds and bugs panicked and all began wildly chirping at once.

As the sky turned to total darkness, the wildlife grew silent, as if they were experiencing the same awe and reverence for the event as the humans in attendance.

The eclipse only lasted about 3 minutes. I set a timer on my phone, and allowed myself 1 minute to shoot, and 2 minutes to just sit back and enjoy the celestial moment.

Lunar Eclipse 2019

On January 20, 2019, I put my baby to bed and prepared my camera gear, while my husband entertained our guests, who had come to watch a New England Patriots playoff game.

I slipped out my front door with my tripod slung over my shoulder and set up to shoot on the sidewalk of my small Massachusetts city. As midnight approached, the temperature dropped to zero degrees Fahrenheit. I shivered on the sidewalk and listened to my warm husband and friends cheer as the home team secured yet another trip to the Superbowl.

My fingers froze, as I took off my gloves to adjust my camera settings to prepare for the total lunar eclipse that was coming. The earth’s shadow completely covered the moon at 12:13 am.

My efforts were rewarded by a brilliant red full moon shining above my home. I stood alone on my street, enjoying the total lunar eclipse, while the rest of the neighborhood stayed watching the football game on their glowing televisions.

Beaver Blood Moon 2022

The Beaver Blood Moon of November 8, 2022 was the final total lunar eclipse for North America in 2022. We are not going to get the chance to view another until 2025.

I set my alarm for 4:30 am, climbed out of my warm bed, and wandered around in the 2-degree-celsius cold trying to catch a glimpse of the moon between the tall pines that surround my neighborhood. I only had a few minutes to enjoy the totality before the sun came up and the morning light dimmed the brilliant red glow of the moon.
